ACFID is established in recognition of the needs of people in developing countries for poverty alleviation and promotion and protection of their human rights. Australian NGOs make a valuable contribution by sharing Australian resources and strengthening civil society capacity in these countries.

The association is incorporated in the Australian Capital Territory under the Associations Incorporation Act of the ACT.

The ACFID Constitution was last updated on 16 January 2011 (Schedule 1 to the ACFID Consititution is the ACFID Code of Conduct).
