Urgent action needed for worst drought in 50 years

13 July 2011

The UN Humanitarian Affairs Chief, Baroness Valerie Amos, has called for urgent action to help millions of people in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia who are suffering the most severe drought in more than 50 years.

Baroness Amos says urgent action is needed to avoid a full-scale disaster. The UK has pledged $60 million in emergency aid to the Horn of Africa as aid agencies warn up to 10 million people are at risk of starvation in the region.

ACFID member agencies are currently running appeals for the East Africa crisis. Further information is available at Humanitarian and emergency response.
