ACFID Awards 2010: Sir Ron Wilson Human Rights Award & Contribution to the Sector
Dr Meredith Burgmann, President of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), last night presented the 2010 ACFID Outstanding Contribution to the Sector Award to Judy Mitchell, and the 2010 Sir Ron Wilson Human Rights Award to Alison Tate.The Outstanding Contribution to the Sector Award acknowledges the outstanding contribution of an individual to the Australian aid and development NGO sector over an extended period of time.
Judy Mitchell is a member and former Chair of the Board of Oxfam Australia and a former member of the Board of Oxfam International. Judy holds the position of Special Representative (International NGO Governance) with Oxfam Australia. She has a background in the education sector including working in the areas of disability and professional development. Judy has a keen interest in the governance of not-for-profit organisations. She is currently a co-deputy chairperson of the ACFID Code of Conduct Committee and has worked tirelessly on the recent review of the ACFID Code of Conduct. In the Queen's Birthday 2010 Honours List, Judy was made a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for 'service to humanitarian aid through leadership roles with Oxfam, particularly the development of improved governance and accountability standards'.
The Sir Ron Wilson Human Rights Award recognises an outstanding contribution to advancing human rights in the international development sector. Alison Tate receives this award for her human rights work, especially her support for the struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma, and for her work in promoting workers’ rights.
Ms Tate has dedicated the award the Burmese labour rights activist Su Su Nwe and democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Alison has been active in campaigns for human rights in many countries and has supported community groups in their advocacy in relation to migrant workers, domestic workers, women and struggles for democracy and independence. Alison has promoted the agenda of corporate accountability and human rights issues directly with business groups and in international forums, and coordinated and led international trade union advocacy on respect for labour rights.
Alison worked for Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA for more than eight years and more recently spent six years as the International Director of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). She currently works for the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
