APCML/SOAS Symposium - Peacekeeping in the Asia-Pacific: Gender Equality, Law and Security

University of Melbourne Law School
Symposium on incorporating a gender perspective into peacekeeping operations

Speakers:

Keynote speaker Professor Karen Engle, Plenary speaker Professor Hilary Charlesworth

Description:

The Symposium will bring together around twenty speakers from military, academic, government, NGO and operational backgrounds, primarily from the Asia-Pacific region, to discuss their perspectives on and experiences with incorporating a ‘gender perspective’ into peacekeeping operations, as required by UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000). It will be the first time that this topic is explored in a scholarly symposium in Australia and it coincides with the development of an Australian National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

The Symposium is convened by Dr Gina Heathcote (SOAS) and Professor Dianne Otto (MLS).

Please note that the Symposium timing is as follows:

Thursday, 19 April
1.30pm - 5.15pm, followed by the Public Lecture at 5.45pm
