Basis of data collection:

Signatories to the ACFID Code of Conduct are required to produce comprehensive annual reports according to standards set by the Code. In the past, data for the survey was only collected from ACFID Members and Code of Conduct signatories. Knowing that the aid and development sector is bigger than just our Membership and Code signatories, we wish to properly gauge the full breadth of the aid and development sector. This year we have incorporated data from agencies outside of the Membership and Code signatories into some of the statistics where it has been available.

With a data set that better reflects the whole of the aid and development sector, we are able to have more informed discussions with the media, the Government and the public. As the method of collection has changed, not all of the statistics are comparable to those of previous years.

Most of the data used relates to agencies’ 2009-10 financial year. This is not always the case as some agencies have amended accounting periods. Where this occurs, the most recent available data is incorporated into the 2009-10 data.

Note, monies received from AusAID during the period do not equate to AusAID funds spent by agencies during the same period. Timing differences occur for a variety of reasons. These include delays in programme start up, the fact that not all agencies have a June to July financial period and because funds may be received for multi-year programmes.

In 2009-10

  • The Australian public donated over $851million to aid and development work through Australian NGOs. This figure makes up around 70% of total funds raised by agencies and includes funds raised from donations, legacies and bequests.

  • 1.3 million Australians were donors to regular supporter programs (child sponsorship or regular donor programs). In all, 2.1 million people were involved in supporting an overseas aid and development NGO—either as a regular supporter, by supporting a fundraiser or event or giving a one-off donation.

  • 93,670 volunteers contributed their time to the work of ACFID member agencies and Code of Conduct signatory organisations.

  • Australian Government funding for NGOs through AusAID amounted to $197.6 million in the period under review. AusAID funding contributed to around 16.3% of the total funds managed by the sector for this period.

  • Grants from other Australian and multi-lateral donors made up around 9.4% of total funds raised by the sector, amounting to $114.8 million in the period under review.
