Burma Working Group
Convenors required
The ACFID Burma Working Group is a forum comprised of representatives from ACFID member agencies. The main functions of the group are to discuss the working environment within Burma and on the Thai–Burma border and share information about programs implemented by working group agencies and their partners.
A small number of Australian NGOs now work inside Burma in a range of sectors, while others continue to work along the border supporting refugee programs. Although there has been a degree of tension in the past among NGOs concerning the ethics of working in Burma, there is now a growing recognition that the humanitarian conditions inside the country cannot wait for full resolution of the political situation before they are addressed.
The types of issues addressed by programs implemented by working group agencies include health, water and sanitation, HIV, education, child rights, human security, internally displaced people, human trafficking and migration, landmines, gender, food security, mico economic development and local partner capacity building for development.
The Burma Working Group currently does not meet but the Group does occasionally convene to collaborate on joint work.
